Jason Sharma - Tutor and Owner
I'm a current secondary school teacher with over 12 years of experience at both public and private schools throughout New Zealand, as well as international teaching experience, most recently in South Korea. I've been teaching in Hamilton and living in the Waikato for the past 8 years.I graduated from the University of Auckland in 2013 with a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science (conjoint), majoring in Finance, Statistics, and Geology, along with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching. My classroom experience spans Mathematics, Economics, and Business Studies up to Year 13, as well as Science to Year 11 level.I'm excited to offer my expertise to help students reach their full potential. My goal is not just to improve results, but to build lasting confidence in my students. I create a supportive environment where they can ask questions freely and truly master mathematical concepts. My philosophy is simple: meet each student exactly where they are and accelerate their learning from that point, whether you're a Year 9 student struggling to grasp key concepts or aiming for NZQA Scholarship in Statistics or Economics.
Why choose JS Tutoring?
The New Zealand curriculum, particularly NCEA, is complex and evolving constantly. This makes having an experienced, currently practicing teacher as your tutor invaluable for achieving your best results. While getting tutoring from university students and those who are from outside of the education sector certainly can work, only a practicing teacher can provide the detailed insights needed to truly master NCEA internal and external assessments. Is maths tutoring really necessary?
For many students, yes. Mathematics is cumulative—once you fall behind, it becomes increasingly difficult to catch up. By the time students reach high school, some have already fallen so far behind that the mountain feels impossible to climb. With average class sizes approaching 30 students in most New Zealand high schools, personalised tutoring provides the individual attention that's often missing in the classroom. What's the difference between small group tutoring and private tutoring?
Small group tutoring offers a flexible, drop-in style environment where you can complete homework, work on internal assessments, or prepare for tests with expert guidance. Private tutoring, however, is completely tailored to your needs. Together, we'll create a personalised learning plan, and I'll design resources specifically for you while setting goals and tracking your progress over time.Do you offer a trial session?
Absolutely. I understand how important it is to ensure my teaching style works well for you before making a commitment. Please contact me via the Contact page and I'll get back to you with information about arranging a free small group tutoring trial session. This gives you a chance to experience the learning environment and see if JS Tutoring is the right fit for your needs. How often should I have tutoring sessions?
This depends entirely on your goals and current situation. If you're finding maths challenging or have fallen behind in class, regular weekly sessions work best for building momentum and confidence. If you're generally managing well, strategic tutoring around assessment periods and exams can be very effective too.Do you offer online tutoring?
No, I focus exclusively on face-to-face tutoring. In my experience as a teacher, building mathematical confidence—which is crucial for success—happens most effectively in person. There are countless subtle cues and moments of understanding that simply can't be captured through a screen.Where is JS Tutoring Studio located?
Currently, I operate from my small converted garage studio while I search for a permanent location. It's a comfortable, focused learning environment designed specifically for tutoring. For private sessions, I'm also happy to come to your home if that's more convenient for you.Do you tutor IB and CIE?
Absolutely. While assessment methods may differ between curricula, the underlying mathematical concepts remain similar. However, my particular expertise lies with NCEA, which is what most New Zealand schools follow, so NCEA students will benefit most from my specialised knowledge.
